Tesla is Coming to India

Elon Musk has been talking about Tesla's plan to enter India for quite some time now. The electric automobile manufacturer's CEO has now hinted that Tesla may arrive in India in 2021.

While replying to a Twitter post, with photographs of t-shirts having captions like 'India Wants Tesla' and 'India Loves Tesla', Musk said: "Next year for sure."

Musk did not stop here. A Twiter user had posted: "Omg!! Elon this is a celebrating news.. We were waiting for ages." In his reply, Tesla CEO said: "Thanks for waiting!"

For Elon Musk, taking to Twitter to divulge important details about his company is not new, more so when it comes to Tesla's foray into India.

In March 2019, Musk had said that Tesla would definitely arrive in India by 2020. Then again in July 2020, he had hinted at the company's foray into India in a year's time.

However, responding to a question in August 2019 on when Tesla will enter India, Elon Musk said in a tweet: "I'm told import duties are extremely high (up to 100 per cent), even for electric cars. This would make our cars unaffordable."

At present, Tesla sells electric vehicles like Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y. It had unveiled the Cybertruck in November 2019. The Tesla Cybertruck's production will reportedly start in late 2021.

Among the popular electric vehicles currently on sale in India are the Tata Nexon EV, the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric. Mercedes-Benz will launch the EQC in India on October 8, thereby becoming the first premium car manufacturer to launch a fully electric vehicle or BEV here.
